Assignment 1 - Pressure

All work will be due on January 15th at 11:59 pm HOL time. No work submitted after this date will receive points.

Each assignment will consist of different options to pick from. You can pick whichever combination of options you like, up to a total of 60 points worth of work. The first 30 points will be your homework and the second 30 points will be your extra credit. If you accidentally send in more than 60 points worth of work, only the first 60 points worth will be marked.

The subject of emails should be Space Medicine - Assignment # - HOL Name

Example: Space Medicine - Assignment 2 - Bella Coupland

Attachments will not be opened.

Please include your HOL name and House in the body of your email.

Should you rely on assistive technology or have any other needs that should be taken into account, please contact me and we can discuss other options for certain parts of the assignments

Option 1 - True or False (10 points)

Please tell me if each of the following statements are true or false. If they are false, please tell me the correct answer. Each statement is worth 2 points each.

1. The International Space Station has the same pressure and percentage of oxygen as the Earth's surface.
2. A human body exposed to space without protection will be easily able to breathe.
3. If a human climbed a mountain 30 km high, they would be able to survive.
4. The sickness where bubbles of gas get stuck in a human's bodily tissues is called 'the creaks'.
5. The pressure on Earth is caused by the weight of the atmosphere pushing down on us.


Option 2 - Fill in the Blanks (10 points)

Please fill in the blanks. Each statement is worth 2 points each.

1. The Extravehicular Mobility Unit is made up of a helmet, ______, legs, boots, arms and _____ sections.
2. As you rise up higher in the atmosphere, it becomes ______ to breathe.

Option 3 - Description (10 points)

Please use creative language to describe what would happen to a human body exposed to space without any protection. Think about what might happen on the outside of their body, and what might happen on the inside. Would there be any sounds? Which organs would be affected and what would happen to them? You are welcome to research additional information but please write down the sources that you used. Minimum 75 words.

Option 4 - Jigsaw Puzzle (10 points)

Please complete the following jigsaw puzzle. Take a screenshot of the completed puzzle, including the number of pieces and the time it took you to complete it. Upload this to an image hosting site, such as Postimages.org and send me the link. Do not send your image as an attachment as it will NOT be opened.

Option 5 - Research Task 1 (15 points)

We talked about the 'EMU' space suit in this lesson, but there are other kinds of space suits too. Pick another space suit to research and then answer the following questions. You are welcome to research additional information but please write down the sources that you used.

1. What is this space suit called?
2. When was this space suit first created?
3. Who created this space suit?
4. What materials is it made from?
5. What situations is this space suit used in?
6. How does this space suit apply pressure to the body?
7. What are some of the advantages or benefits of this space suit?
8. What are some of the disadvantages of this space suit?

Option 6 - Graphic (10 points)

Time to get creative! Please draw a human (or animal, if you like!) wearing a space suit of your choice. Please also include one sentence telling me what the space suit's name is, and what the character is doing (are they on a spacewalk in orbit, are they on the Moon or Mars etc?). Upload your image to a hosting site, such as Postimages.org and send me the link. Do not send your image as an attachment as it will NOT be opened.

Option 7 - Haiku (5 points)

Please write a Haiku about what happens to a human body exposed to space without protection. A Haiku is a three line poem that has 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the next line, and 5 syllables in the last line.

Option 8 - Research Task 2 (15 points)

There have been some situations in the history of spaceflight that resulted in loss of pressure of a spacecraft or space suit. Research one of these situations and answer the following questions:

1. What was the time, place and location?
2. Who was involved?
3. What was the cause of the situation?
4. What was the outcome? What happened to the people and/or spacecraft and/or spacesuit?
5. How could we make sure this kind of situation does not happen again?

You are welcome to research additional information but please write down the sources that you used.
