Assignment 2 - Microgravity (Part 1)

All work will be due on January 15th at 11:59 pm HOL time. No work submitted after this date will receive points.

Each assignment will consist of different options to pick from. You can pick whichever combination of options you like, up to a total of 60 points worth of work. The first 30 points will be your homework and the second 30 points will be your extra credit. If you accidentally send in more than 60 points worth of work, only the first 60 points worth will be marked.

All assignments should be sent to hol.spacemedicine@gmail.com

The subject of emails should be Space Medicine - Assignment # - HOL Name

Example: Space Medicine - Assignment 2 - Bella Coupland

Attachments will not be opened.

Please include your HOL name and House in the body of your email.

Should you rely on assistive technology or have any other needs that should be taken into account, please contact me and we can discuss other options for certain parts of the assignments

Option 1 - Recipe (10 points)

We talked about how microgravity causes astronauts to feel congested and lose some of their sense of smell and taste. Please create a recipe for a meal that may help fix congestion and/or be very flavorful to eat. Make sure to include a list of ingredients, instructions on how to prepare and eat the meal, and reasons why you chose to use those ingredients.

Option 2 - Short Answer (10 points)

Please answer the following questions. Each question is worth 2 points each.

1. What is one reason why a person on Earth might get swollen feet at the end of the day?
2. When a human is in space, where does their body fluid move to?
3. How does the Chibis suit help fight the problem of fluid shift?
4. What is the pressure inside the human skull called?
5. How much gravity does Mars have compared to Earth?

Option 3 - Experiment (15 points)

You will need a way to measure time, and a mirror.

We are going to simulate what it might be like to experience fluid shift. This task requires physical movement. Perform one of the following following physical movements for 60 seconds:

1. Lie down on the floor against a wall. Place your bottom where the floor and wall meet, and create an 'L' shape, resting your legs on the wall, and resting your back on the floor.

2. Lie down on a bed with your head at one edge. Shuffle slowly towards the edge so that your head and shoulders are off the bed and hang lower than the rest of your body.

3. Perform a handstand against a wall

Once you reach 60 seconds, examine your face in a mirror and answer the following questions:

1. What changes can you see in your face?
2. How easy was it for you to breathe? Did it get easier or harder to breathe as time went on?
3. Describe any other sensations or feelings you experienced

Option 3 - Fill in the Blanks (10 points)

Please fill in the blanks. Each statement is worth 2 points each.

1. Extra fluid in the skull can cause a kink in the ____ nerve, and choroidal ______.
2. Facial swelling can lead to congestion of the _____ and ______.
3. The Chibis suit uses ______ to pull suction on the ______ body.
4. One favorite condiment for astronauts is __  ______.
5. Many astronauts need to wear ______ to fix the damage to their sight caused by the new shape of their ______.

Option 4 - Graphic (10 points)

The next round of muggle astronauts are about to be chosen, and as a student of space medicine, it's your job to help them understand how fluid shift will change their body in space!

Create an information graphic (no bigger than 600 x 600 pixels) that will be handed out to the astronauts. You are free to include images that are not your own, but the final piece must be your own work. Upload your image to a hosting site, such as Postimages.org and send me the link. Do not send your image as an attachment as it will NOT be opened.

Option 5 - Jigsaw Puzzle (10 points)

Please complete the following jigsaw puzzle. Take a screenshot of the completed puzzle, including the number of pieces and the time it took you to complete it. Upload this to an image hosting site, such as Postimages.org and send me the link. Do not send your image as an attachment as it will NOT be opened.

Option 6 - Research Task (15 points)

In this lesson, we talked a lot about what happens to an eyeball and how fluid moves around the body in space, but we didn't cover how we measure these changes.

For this task, please research how we measure the effects of fluid shift on the human body in space. Please tell me about the different equipment that is used, whether an astronaut can measure these things by themselves or if they need help, and what kinds of bodily fluids might get measured (e.g urine, blood etc). Please make sure to write down the information sources that you used. Minimum 200 words.

Option 7 - Haiku (5 points)

Please write a Haiku about what fluid shift does to the body in microgravity. A Haiku is a three line poem that has 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the next line, and 5 syllables in the last line.

Option 8 - Maze (5 points)

We were measuring the eyes of an astronaut and found many choroidal folds! Find your way through the maze of folds to find the optic nerve!
